As we lead up to our second Lead U Conference (For the Life of the Church: Christianity and Cultural Engagement, April 27-28), we are sharing links to the presentations from our first conference last fall, Christianity and the Death of the Old Testament. Below is a brief summary of this week’s featured presentation with a link to the video. We hope you will join us on April 27-28 for our second conference!
Main Session #3: “The Old Testament as Christian Scripture: An Ending in Search of a Story” by Stephen Dempster
Summary: In this session Dr. Dempster explores the importance of understanding and embracing the Old Testament as Christian Scripture. Like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, when we read the Old Testament our hearts should burn within us and we should see the reality that Jesus is the message and fulfillment of those Old Testament Scriptures. Dr. Dempster compares our reading of the New Testament without an Old Testament to an attempt to read J. R. R. Tolkien’s Return of the King without having read the first three volumes–to do so would be to read an ending in search of a story. Likewise, to read the New Testament without the Old is to find an ending in search of a story–the Old Testament is that story!
