1 Chronicles slider

First Chronicles 11 lists the names and many of the accomplishments of David’s mighty men, the Thirty. They are impressive accomplishments and suggest incredible courage and skill. Yet the most intriguing aspect of this section is that the Chronicler never attributes David’s strength or accomplishments (including the recovery of Jerusalem from the Jebusites) to the strength of the Thirty. Rather the Chronicler says that David grew more powerful, “and the LORD of Hosts was with him” (v. 9). It is the LORD’s presence, not the Thirty, that makes David truly powerful, and this is perhaps the most significant difference between David and Saul.
